BTR launches battery material promising 20% longer EV battery life

BTR New Materials Group Co., Ltd. launched a new battery technology at the third China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) last week that could lead to longer-lasting electric vehicle batteries.

The company unveiled what it claims is the industry's first graphite anode material specifically engineered for silicon-based anodes, which can store up to 10 times more energy than current battery materials.

BTR said its S+i graphite solution addresses three technical challenges that have prevented battery manufacturers from successfully using silicon-based anodes in commercial products: lithium crosstalk effects — which occur when lithium ions interfere with each other during charging and discharging — uneven material dispersion that creates weak spots in batteries, and poor thermal stability that causes overheating problems.

Test data shows BTR's new solution increases battery lifespan by 20% compared with conventional graphite while maintaining high-capacity retention during dormancy periods, meaning EV batteries would hold their charge better when not in use. Storage performance also improves by more than 25%, according to BTR.

"Silicon-based anodes are key to breaking through the energy density limitations of lithium batteries, but coordination between materials has been a bottleneck to their practical application," a BTR technician said.

"Our solution is a tailored innovation from the graphite end, enabling greater synergy with silicon-based anodes," the technician added.

At the expo, BTR also partnered with industry players including CATL, AITO, XPeng and Volvo to showcase supply chain advances for smart vehicles.
