ANKARA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye will begin providing natural gas to Syria on Saturday via a pipeline through the southern Kilis province, as part of a project involving partnerships with Azerbaijan and Qatar, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Wednesday.

"We made a swap agreement with Azerbaijan, and the gas that will come from Azerbaijan will be exported to Aleppo, Syria, via Kilis," Bayraktar told semi-official Anadolu Agency.

The initiative aims to support electricity production in Syria and help stabilize the country's energy infrastructure, he said.

Bayraktar noted that Türkiye had completed a natural gas pipeline extending from Kilis to Aleppo in May, adding that Qatar would provide financing support for the project.

Bayraktar explained that Türkiye plans to send 6 million cubic meters of gas to Syria, enabling the production of approximately 1,200 megawatts of electricity.

"This gas will be used as fuel in Syria's existing power plants," he said, adding that it could increase daily electricity access in the country from three to four hours to around 10 hours.

Türkiye will also contribute 500 megawatts of electricity from its own supply to help address Syria's urgent energy needs, the minister said.

The Turkish minister added that efforts are underway to reactivate a previously used transmission line.

"There's been considerable damage on the Syrian side of that line," Bayraktar said. "Once it is fully operational again, nearly 900 megawatts of electricity will be delivered to Syria, meeting the needs of about 1.6 million households." Enditem
